Influencing people using power and authority is common and easy. It may work well in a hierarchy based team structure, but the results will be short term and temporary. However, in a team based work culture such as Scrum, there is no hierarchy within the team. So everyone is equal in a team and no one reports to anyone. In such work environments, leaders will not have authority but they have a responsibility to influence the team members. Especially in Scrum, the Scrum Master has a responsibility to influence the Developers and Product Owner to be more effective. Influencing without formal authority can be challenging but is often essential for achieving goals in various contexts, such as workplaces, communities, or social circles. Here are some strategies to effectively influence others without relying on formal authority:
